Bosnia: media, MPs ask High Representative to clarify moves

After news on electoral reform

26 July, 19:36
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUL 26 - Christian Schmidt, the High Representative of the International Community in Bosnia, said today that he will be unable to grant the request of lawmakers in Bosnia's Federation (FBiH) entity who wanted him to speak about his potential decision to impose electoral reform in the country at a parliament session on Tuesday due to other obligations.

According to diplomatic sources, Schmidt plans to use his 'Bonn Powers' to impose measures to ensure the re-operation of Bosnia's Federation (FBiH) by August 1. The draft decision includes changes to the Election Law that have been heavily criticized by Bosnjaks parties. While Bosnian Croat political parties, most notably the Croat Democratic Union (HDZ BiH), welcomed Schmidt's plan, opponents argue that the changes would lead to further systematic ethnic divisions in the country.

Protests against the proposed reform were held in Sarajevo this week. (ANSA).
